{Donnie Downs}
What images come to mind when you think about dedication, character, leadership or selflessness. Maybe it is a picture of a man sitting on a bucket and giving signs to a catcher during a softball game. It might look like a man who always finds time to give instruction no matter what his schedule looks like. The image is of Donnie Downs. His resume is nearly unparalleled in fast-pitch softball. He gave over 30 years of devotion to helping athletes attain goals. His goals were always to develop players to become more successful, instill confidence in them, and be a mentor and role model. With Donnie, it was never about assembling an all-star team to collect trophies and compare wins and losses. Instead, it was always about building up people through athletics and teaching life lessons along the way. He has touched so many lives through fast pitch softball, baseball, and basketball, the numbers are too difficult to keep track of. Donnie was much more than just a coach to these young lives by acting as a father figure to which some have modeled their own parenthood after. Picture yourself as a young parent who doesn’t know much about a sport and your child is attempting to play for the first time. What if you knew the coach’s agenda was to positively build your child’s character, give them a sense of self- worth, develop their skill level as an athlete, and teach them to be an exemplary role model for others. Would that ease your mind about letting them play?
The Donnie Downs Youth Athletic Fund was created to honor the man who believed in so many young people and helped them become successful persons in and out of the athletic arena. It was constructed as to pass on his legacy of helping build young athletes into positive role models for society. The best gift anyone can give to see this legacy continue is to support the fund so others may have the opportunity to be touched by Donnie’s greatness. On behalf of Donnie’s family, we thank you for your support of the Donnie Downs Youth Athletic Fund.
