Rotational and Linear hitting are two of the widely known practices in softball. Learn about the differences between the two and Tony Milz's opinion on the techniques.
Rotational Hitting Theory
Rotational hitting theory believes the most effective way to hit is by supplying energy from the rotation of your body on a stationary axis. Law of physics states that, “An object tends to stay tangent to the direction of force.” Basically, using the bat as a pendulum, building up power from the start to the middle(contact) and end of the swing. Golfers use this same idea. Pendulum builds up energy on the same axis.
Linear Hitting Theory
Linear hitting theory believes in the “Crack the Whip” idea. One of the theories used to explain Linear hitting is that, “if the batter quickly extends or throws the hands at the ball - the bat head will snap around like the crack of a whip.”
Linear hitting has to do with shifting weight from the back foot to the front foot, while extending arms. This allows for the body’s kinetic energy into bat speed. “Crack the Whip” theory is also used in golf.
Tony Milz a highly regarded hitting coach has his own opinion on hitting. He believes that to some extent both rotational and linear hitting work cohesively for the most effective swing. His YouTube training videos help give many important tips and explanation of rotational hitting. His main motto is “Make your body deliver the barrel, not your arms” (Milz).
Some of his training exercises as you can see in his YouTube training videos are:
· Swing while putting knee to the ground
o Swing with rotation as you go to the ground
o Teaches to open shoulders as you hit the ball
o Right contact on ball
· RTC – Rotate to Contact
o Never move your arms
o Use lead hand as a hook on the bat
o Body does all the work
o Shine the flashlight – then fully extend (makes body to work to ball contact then fully swing through)
o “Keep your V” (angle of arm while swinging) Allows you to have power from core- Control the bat – be a better hitter.
· Water bottle drill
o Helps you keep the V
o Water bottle should come out in front because you kept the V in your arms
3 step quarterback drop drill
1. Step back (proper load)
2. Wasted step – foot goes behind
3. Step back – Natural foot alignment (how far your foot should be apart)
· Straight foot
4. Step forward
· Bat in front of your hands
5. Step down and ready
· This teaches rhythm
